The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reportedly cut thousands of probation workers as the tax season increases, according to the Associated Press.

The announcement comes days after the Trump administration directed agencies to fire most probation workers who have not secured civil servant protection.

Layoffs could affect hundreds of thousands of people, but the exact number has not been confirmed yet, the AP reports.

The Associated Press reported that thousands of IRS employees will be fired.

In addition to cutting out probation, President Donald Trump announced on January 29 that federal employees will be fired if they do not return to in-person work by early February.

The extended acquisition offer has already been accepted by around 65,000 employees.

According to a letter sent recently to IRS employees, IRS employees involved in the 2025 tax season that began on January 27th will be buying them until after the taxpayer deadline. He reported that he was not qualified.

In January, the IRS announced that “additional resources have made it possible to continue the success of the 2023 and 2024 tax return seasons.”

According to a September 2023 report from the House Oversight Committee, the Biden administration’s Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act dedicated $80 billion to hire 87,000 new IRS agents.

The oversight committee argued that the funds were used to hire agents targeting middle-class Americans, particularly those who were of the middle class.

According to an IRS statement in January, the last two filing seasons saw service levels average under five minutes on the main phone lines, with around 85%. Additionally, the number of taxpayers provided at taxpayer support centers across the country has increased significantly.

“This is a historic period of improvement for the IRS, and people will see additional tools and features that will help them submit taxes this tax season,” IRS committee member Danny Werfel wrote in a statement . “These taxpayer-centered improvements we’ve made so far are important, but they’re just the beginning of what the IRS needs. Plus, they can make ongoing investments in the country’s tax system.”

According to the Associated Press, the IRS expects to receive more than 140 million tax returns.
