According to the Sheriff’s Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy who took leave in January 2023 was released from prison on $50,000 bonds after being arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of felony domestic violence.

The arrest of 30-year-old Jim DeVoe comes two years after he was arrested and charged with physically abusing his five-year-old son.

Beyond the fact that Devaw was arrested in Lancaster at 4:10pm on Monday, there is little information on the current situation in the case. However, a Sheriff’s Department spokesperson said he was arrested on suspicion of physical injuries to his spouse or housemate.

A department spokesperson said in an emailed statement last week that it had launched a detective and internal administrative investigation into Devaux, who worked as a executor at Antelope Valley Court in Lancaster.

“The Sheriff’s department holds employees to the highest standards of integrity and professionalism,” the statement said. “We are committed to ensuring accountability for on-service and off-service behaviour, as we gain public trust through transparency, responsibility and compliance with the law.”

Devoe’s lawyer, Sharon Paris Babakhan, said in an email he could not comment on his latest arrest. However, she said, “It is important to recognize that Jim has endured significant personal and professional losses as a result of pending issues. The past two years have been extremely difficult for him.”

Devoe admitted not to commit felony child abuse in June 2023, after being arrested on suspicion of assaulting his five-year-old son and issuing a protective order requiring him to avoid contact with his child.

The two’s father told the boy’s mother in text that the LA County District Attorney’s Office in a May 2023 statement that the child hurt himself while riding his bike.

When she picked him up from Devoe’s house, documents reviewed by the Times at the time showed that their son had serious bruises and swelling in his face. The 5-year-old and his brother told sheriff’s investigators in a hospital interview that Devoe punched the boy, the documents said.

Devoe was accused of slapping and punching him in the face, causing visible injuries and lying to the boy’s mother about the cause of the injury, including swelling and bruises in the face, bleeding eyes, and red marks,” a May 2023 statement from the District Attorney’s Office said.

Babahan emailed him that he “negotiated a favorable resolution with the district attorney” regarding the 2023 case.

“We expect the matter to be closed on the next court date on July 1, 2025,” she said. “The terms are yet to be finalised, but we expect both felony charges to be dismissed and sued to a single misdemeanor count.”

The Sheriff’s Office appointed DeVoe three months before his 2023 arrest in connection with several allegations of illegal conduct in which he allegedly owned illegal steroids, according to documents interviewed by the Times at the time and two law enforcement agencies. A department statement issued last week said it was reassuring, saying it was “a duty until the results of the internal control investigation are revealed.”

Anthony Salerno, the lawyer who represented Devaux before Babakan took over his case, denied the steroid claim in May 2023, saying his mission was eased after his client passed a drug test and his driver’s license was suspended for speeding at a very high speed.
