The Los Angeles-based immigration advocacy group voiced anger on Wednesday after receiving a letter from the chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counter Terrorism, questioning whether the nonprofit had anything to do with recent violent protests following the ice attack.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) wrote to the Party for Socialism and Liberation, and the Union Del Barrio’s Humanitarian Immigration Rights (Chairah) coalition, asking if he promoted protesters in Los Angeles.
“Reliable reports suggest that your organization provided logistics support and financial resources to individuals engaged in these disruptive behaviors,” writes Holy. “Let me be clear: Saving civil unrest is not a protected speech. It supports and behaves in criminal activity.”
Holy also requested internal communications and financial records from Chaira, according to a letter posted to social media.
In response to the letter, Chaira said in a statement he would reject allegations of violating the law.
“Our mission is rooted in non-violent advocacy, community safety and democratic values,” Chaira executive director Angelica Salas said in a statement.
NBC Los Angeles contacted the party for socialism and liberation and contacted the union Del Barrio for comments.
