Underprivileged students around Los Angeles County now have freshly washed and dried clothes every day thanks to an expanded mobile laundry service.
Laundry Truck LA picks up unwashed clothing from families at Los Angeles-area schools at the start of the day and returns it laundered, dried and folded by the end of the day.
The Laundry Truck LA will give students and families access to fresh laundry as the nonprofit founded by fashion designer and Dolan Scrubs owner Jody Dolan partners with school districts across Los Angeles. Added a third truck to.
More than 10,000 children in Los Angeles County experience homelessness and are unable to attend school due to limited resources for clean clothing, Dolan said.
“We know that by keeping kids clean and making them feel confident, they’re more likely to attend school,” Dolan says.
The organization operates in schools, including elementary schools in the Skid Row area. Since 40% of students are unhoused, The Laundry Truck LA provides services at their location one day a week.
“We do it before school,” Dolan said. “It’s usually mothers who deliver the laundry when they drop off their children in the morning.”
Expanded services are available to elementary, middle, and high school families as well as various colleges and universities around Los Angeles.
“Everyone should feel confident and comfortable,” Dolan said. “There is an urgent need to feel hygienic, feel good, feel confident and empower our communities.”
Starting in January, The Laundry Truck LA will announce new school locations that will be accessible to a variety of families.
The nonprofit, founded in 2019, is currently funded by grants, donations and the Dolan Scrub, which is owned by Dolan. She says that for every scrub sold, the foundation cleans one pound of laundry, totaling 425,000 pounds of laundry to date.
“The beauty of the wash truck is that it’s a community effort,” Dolan said.
