Her family said former House Rep. Nita Roy, DN.Y., passed away at the age of 87.
Lowy, the first woman to represent New York for 32 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and chair the House Appropriations Committee, died Saturday, according to a report by the New York Post.
“Nita’s family was at the heart of her life, just as she was all of us,” the family of longtime lawmakers said in a statement. “We’ll miss her more than she can say and be extremely comforted to know that she’s living a complete and purposeful life.”

The New York State Assemblyman was born to Nita Sue Menikov in the Bronx in 1937, and later graduated from Bronx High School and continued to earn his degree from Mount Holyoke College in 1959, the Post Report states.
She married attorney Stephen Roy in 1961 and was first elected to Congress in 1988 to represent New York’s 17th Congressional District.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and longtime Clinton ally Roy became chairman of the House Appropriations Committee in 2019. She frequently took office with President Donald Trump and frequently clashed during her first term as chairman.

“The President is an embarrassment, and as a member of Congress and as a leader of the Approximately Expenditure Committee, we have a responsibility to serve people,” she said at the time.
Roy announced his retirement that same year, House Democrat leader Haicum Jeffries (DN.Y.) told the New York Post that the longtime lawmaker was a “principle, passionate and powerful civil servant.”

“During the course of her historic career, Congressman Lowey bravely served her members, standing up for the New Yorker, shattering multiple glass ceilings along the way,” Jeffries said Sunday.
Lowey is survived by her husband, three children and eight grandchildren.
