The Mayor of Paradise offers hope for Altadena during tour – NBC Los Angeles

Mayor Paradise, the deadliest wildfire location in California’s history, toured the scars of Eton Fireburn on Monday afternoon. After the camp fire destroyed his community almost seven years ago, he provided advice on the reconstruction and recovery process.

Paradise Mayor Steve Crowder wants Altadena people to know that they can rebuild their communities so that they can return even stronger than before.

Crowder was given an hour-long tour of extensive devastation in Altadena, along with local and state leaders.

“The fire really hit me hard and I’m watching it unfold. It really looked like a camp fire,” Crowder said. “The rain or wind didn’t get any air support, and they just unfolded like a paradise.”

In 2018, camp fires tore through the town of Crowder’s paradise. It killed 85 people and destroyed more than 18,000 structures. On the night of Etonfire, Clauder contacted members of the Altadena City Council to let them know what they were going through.

“It was my honor and privilege to help in any way I could. And walking here today, seeing it, I know what they can do, what they do. They’ll be back.

The deadliest and most destructive wildfires in California’s history were caused by poorly maintained PG&E electrical transmission lines. The cause of the Eton fire is under investigation.

Altadena City Council members recently toured Paradise to discuss his recovery with Crowder, who advised them about his experiences.

An update is scheduled for Friday regarding cleaning and reconstruction efforts in areas affected by Eton Fire. Brittany Hope reports an NBC4 News report on March 28, 2024 at 6am.

“We’re building a safer community. All the buildings harden. There’s a new street, underground utilities. The school is being re-started. So there’s plenty of reasons to stay and there’s a lot of hope for a truly bright future.

Almost seven years later, about a third of the towns of paradise were rebuilt. Congressional Republican leader James Gallagher represents California’s Third Congressional District, including Paradise. He hopes everyone will work together to prevent these devastating wildfires.

“We all really agree that we need to do more on the preventative side, and we’ll make sure that we clean up the dangerous fuel in the wild, make sure it’s safe, not making our communities vulnerable, and improve our emergency response system,” Gallagher said.

Paradise has introduced all the utilities underground and expects work to be completed by the end of this year. Safety Enhanced Crowder recommends following Altadena.
