Jackie and Shadow are the world-famous Big Bear Hubs Eagles friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit that oversees nest cameras that observe the Eagles’ daily life, and published a naming contest under the name of Marquia After, random lists were drawn, random lists were drawn and breathed out for third-year students. It was announced on April 1st
Choosing the perfect name, a wonderful moniker that colorfully captures the spirit, essence and joy of the young earth, is always an important and often challenging duty.
Thousands of people were doing that extraordinary job when friends from Big Bear Valley asked fans of Jackie and Shadow, the famous bald eagles who have nests near Big Bear Lake, to name the duo’s two baby birds.
And at the end of April 1st, a cute name was announced.
Why there hello, Sunny and Gizmo. Since you were small and talented and the Shelpeck Hatchling returned in late January, the world has seen you grow.
The naming contest was announced on March 21st and was presented with an emotional revelation. Friends from Big Bear Valley announced that their third baby, the chick who passed away in mid-March during a cold spell, remembers as Misty.
What is the first step to selecting the name of eaglets?
Fans from all over the world – and the dedicated supporters of these birds are truly global – they were invited to submit names and donations to help friends from Big Bear Valley run their cameras (and many excellent environmental efforts in the area).
A randomly selected final list was then presented to Big Bear’s third, fourth and fifth graders for the vote.
Over the past few years, third-grade students have been voting for the chick name. In the heartfelt move, the Eagles’ eggs in 2023 and 2024 were not hatched, so this time they were invited to participate in the efforts of fourth and fifth graders.
Sandy Steers, Executive Director of FOBBV, said:
“And the big bear elementary school students had lots of votes for their favorite names, and all students were learning about Jackie, Shadow and the Chick.
Those who submitted the award names received their certificates in about a week and revealed the FOBBV team.
Some of the names of the 30 finalists included Sassy, Star and Charlie.
The sweet sunny, quirky gizmo feels like a spanky selection for these two unstable youths. The charismatic duo eat, doze off, “poop” and bonking siblings to siblings with nest cams.
Of course, Gizmo may have been an adorable reference to the 1984 film The Gremlins.
And sunny? The sky above the lake is often overflowing with sunburn, so this happy handle is perfect.
In just a few weeks, Sunny and Gizmo look to the sky and begin a thrilling raid process as they spread their new wings and make their first flight to Big Bear Valley.
