Women’s Hospital Nurse – Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills reunited with a square that once cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with ear to ear smiles on Wednesday.
The Monreal brothers, now 4 years old, spent the first nine weeks of their lives in the NICU at the Women’s Hospital. They were born to parents Santina and Adrian Monreal. He joined the exclusive club of the welcoming Kuadolpletto. According to the CDC, only 121 quadruplet births occur in the US per year.
The birth of Monrea’s brothers was not only unusual, but also the result of a high-risk pregnancy. The couple endured miscarriage and then relied on fertile treatment. We then welcomed four children in January 2021.
Santina recalls the shock she felt when she learned she was expecting four children. With her doctor’s appointment, there was silence between her ultrasounds. She said she was surprised by her life after saying she had endured the worst.
“I thought I was having a miscarriage so (the nurse) said he found three and found a fourth heartbeat a few minutes later,” Santina said.
Adrian, who had to tune into appointments via video calls due to Covid regulations at the time, said he was just as unclear as his wife.
“When I heard the nurses say they were two, I honestly spaced apart,” he said. “And three? I honestly don’t remember.”
Since then, the couple has become parents of Sevilla, Eila, Sebastian and Aidan. They all enjoyed a late birthday celebration at their reunion with the former nurse.
The Women’s Hospital had all the bells and whistles for the quadruplet, who graduated from care, with celebratory cupcakes, songs and gifts.
“I was scared to be hospitalized, but it was actually very comforting,” Santina said. “They were so welcoming and they were looking after me… Everyone was very supportive.”
Adrian reflected that sentiment.
“It was great to be here,” he said. “This was our home for a few weeks so I feel like I was able to experience it all. We created a lot of positivity to this day with the nurses.”
