The opening ceremony of the 2028 Olympics will be shared between the oldest and newest stadiums in LA

The Riverfront opening ceremony route for the Parisian Games along the Seine River was probably wondering whether Los Angeles would change its own plans for 2028 and try something equally original. Unfortunately, the city’s Olympic organizers have officially announced their plans, so they need to keep their dreams up. And it appears they are not involved in a parade of athletes on the 110-105 interchange land.

As expected, LA28 announced on Thursday that the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Sophie Stadium will share hosting operations for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games and closing ceremonies.

It is not yet known how exactly they split the Blockbuster event. LA28 states that both locations “have artistic elements.” However, you will need to wait more for the development process to “identify a specific activity.” Inevitably, only one can actually raise the Olympic flag. (Because of its value, LA Mayor Karen Bass called the Coliseum the Olympic “heartbeat” at a press conference Thursday.

In the 2017 bidbook, organizers proposed a “Hollywood-produced program” for live music at the Coliseum. The Olympic torch then leaves the stadium and heads for Inglewood. There, Sophie will hold formal ceremonies, including national parades and Olympic oaths. However, this information is about 8 years old at this point. It’s very likely that plans have changed since then, as LA first bid for the 2024 Olympics and Sophie was still just a dirty field under the temporary “LA Stadium” name.

Anyway, the opening ceremony of the Olympics will be held at both venues on July 14th, 2028. The closing ceremony will then be held only at the Coliseum on July 30th.

The Coliseum will be the first venue to host three Olympics (since 1932 and 1984). And really, it’s no surprise that the ceremony (and athletics) will return to the expo landmark (and home to the USC Trojan football team). It is one of the city’s most story sports venues and the oldest stadium. I broke the ground in late 1921 about a year before the Rose Bowl.

Meanwhile, Sophie Stadium, home to the NFL’s Rams and Chargers, is the region’s latest stadium. After work on bidding for the LA Olympics was already well underway, it was not officially announced until 2015, but by the time the committee’s final bid documents were compiled in 2017, the venue was included as co-hosts for the opening ceremony. In addition to the opening ceremony, the “stadium” (the name without sponsorship used by LA28 in official communications) will also build a temporary pool to host swimming.

News from the ceremony follows recent venue announcements for summer games, including Rose Bowl soccer, Long Beach beach volleyball and squash in the backlot at Universal Studios. You can rule out the full venue plan for the LA28 site.

Ah, and if you’re wondering about tickets? We too. LA28 has not yet announced ticket plans, but if the previous Olympic timeline is any indication, it will need to sit firmly until the beginning of 2027.
