The Pentagon said the probe could include polygraph tests of Department of Defense employees and would investigate what it claims to be a leak of national security information.

Joe Casper, chief of staff for Defense Secretary Pete Hegses, sent a memo Friday stating that the weapons of the Pentagon Intelligence Report Enforcement Agency were investigating “recent fraudulent disclosures” of national security information without providing details regarding the suspected leak.

“The recent unauthorized disclosure of national security information, including sensitive communications with principals within the Secretary of Defense (OSD), calls for immediate and thorough investigation,” Kasper wrote.

“If this effort provides information identifying the parties responsible for unauthorized disclosures, the information will be “referred to the appropriate criminal body for criminal prosecution,” he added.

Kasper’s memo said polygraphs will be used “in accordance with applicable laws and policies.”

President Donald Trump declined to report that Elon Musk, a senior adviser to the New York Times, would be explained how the US handles a potential war with China. Musk responded by suggesting that people who leaked “malicious and false information” to the media will be identified and charged.

“The New York Times is pure publicity,” Musk told X on Friday.

An investigation into alleged leaks at the Pentagon revealed Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem has revealed a move to step up employee lie detection testing to identify people who may be leaking information to the media regarding immigration enforcement.

The Justice Department also released an investigation on Friday into what it allegedly “inaccurate, but nevertheless classified.”

Leaks from within the federal government occur in all administrations of various institutions.

Polygraph tests are usually not permitted in court litigation due to concerns about reliability, but are often used in federal law enforcement and national security notices.

The Supreme Court also held in 1998 that polygraph testing was not acceptable in military justice procedures.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
