The Department of Defense ordered 700 US Marines to leave Los Angeles, California on Monday amid a violent demonstration of the actions of U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) for more than a month was deployed to the city against the will of city leaders.

The Trump administration deployed 700 Marines and deployed around 4,000 National Guard soldiers to the federal government in Los Angeles in early June, suppressing anti-immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) riots and protests.

Marines assigned to the area were limited to defense of federal buildings, including ICE offices and detention facilities in downtown LA.

“As stability returned to Los Angeles, the secretary directed the redeployment of the 700 Marines. “Their quick response, unwavering discipline and unmistakable presence helped them restore order and support the rule of law. I am deeply grateful for their service and the strength and professionalism they have brought to this mission.”

The Pentagon’s decision to leave LA comes after half of the National Guard forces were ordered to leave the city last week.

LA Mayor Karen Bass called the withdrawal of the troops “another victory for Los Angeles.”

“This is another victory for Los Angeles, but it’s also a victory for people in uniform in this country,” Bass said Monday. “This morning I stood with veterans, active officer families and business leaders, showing the impact of this unnecessary, unprecedented and unconstitutional attack on our city. I took the administration to court. Now, we continue our momentum with today’s news.

California Governor Gavin Newsom sued the Trump administration for deploying California State Guard troops despite his opposition. He argued that the National Guard was probably violating the rally’s Comittatas Act, banning the forces from conducting civil law enforcement in US soil.

Newsom won an early victory in the case after a federal judge ruled that security personnel were illegal and exceeded Trump’s authority. The Court of Appeal threw the order and the military rule remained in the federal government. The federal court will hear debate next month on whether the military is violating the Comitatas Act of the Rally.

The National Guard deployed for 60 days, but Defense Secretary Pete Hegses had the discretion to shorten or extend it “to be flexible in responding to evolving situations on the ground.”

Liz Friden, Danielle Wallace, James Levinson and the Associated Press of Fox News contributed to this report.
