Southern California’s Stargazer is looking for a space treat as the annual Perseid meteor shower is expected to peak on August 12th-13th. According to NASA, Stargazer was able to see up to 100 shooting stars per hour under a clear, dark sky.
Perseids are bright stripes of light and are also famous for their occasional fireballs.
“Perseid is attributed to the Earth (split of ice and rock) passing through the fragments left by Comet’s Swift Tuttle, the last time it passed near the Earth in 1992,” according to Space.com.
Southern California residents hoping for front row seats at the show must head to Joshua Tree National Park, Death Valley and Big Bear Lake. These areas are recognized by Darksky.org for exceptional stargazes and low light contamination.
Here is a complete list of places to see the best starry sky.
NASA recommends finding a dark, wide open area. It is recommended to lie flat on your back and allow your eyes to adapt to the darkness for about 30 minutes. No binoculars or telescopes are required.
