The Roman Catholic priest faces five felony child abuse and was taken from his Downey parish after being arrested by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies, records and officials said.
Father Jaime Arriaga, 41, remains at Los Angeles County Men’s Central Jail without bail after a person from at least 10 years ago complained of 14 to 15 people committing a felony and four felony charges on Monday, according to court records.
“The Archdiocese has a long-standing commitment to reporting protection of minors and prevention of abuse,” the Archdiocese said in a statement describing officials reporting priests to authorities.
Jaime Ariaga Pedroza also passed by, Ariaga surrendered to her deputy last Thursday and was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a minor for committing a sexual offence. According to the charges, one of the suspects with WH occurred three times on February 8th, on February 9th, but the attacks attempting to commit a felony on a minor were linked to a sexual offence.
LA County Sheriff Colonel Eric Kim said one casualty was involved in the charges, but detectives from the special victim unit are seeking additional potential victims.
The clergy sexual abuse scandal has rocked Catholic churches around the world, but few places have seen the financial sacrifices of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
Last October, the Archdiocese agreed to a record $880 million civil settlement with the victims, bringing the country’s largest parish payments to more than $1.5 billion. The number of people claiming abuse is currently close to 2,500. According to the Survivors Network of People Abused by Priests, the list of priests who have been abused within the Archdiocese contains over 500 names. But new allegations have become rare after a massive scandal that exposed decades of cover-up.
According to the Archdiocese, Ariaga was appointed in June 2024 and served as the Associate Pastor of Downey’s Enduring Help.
The Archdiocese of LA issued a statement on April 2 that it received a report claiming misconduct. Aliaga was removed from the province and surrendered to LA County Sheriff’s deputies the following day.
In a statement last weekend, read in St. Louis, France in Our Lady’s Eternal Help and Lapuente’s – Ariaga was serving before being ordained – the archdiocese reported that the priest was “excluded from the ministry as a result of a report of alleged sexual misconduct involving minors”…
Parishists were informed that the archdiocese was working with law enforcement. A link to the priest’s profile, including his photos, has been removed from the Archdiocese website.
According to information previously posted by the Archdio de Parish, Alliga is from Tenancingo, Tlaxcala, Mexico.
