Many are beginning to shop earlier than usual as families in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties prepare for the 2025 school year.

According to a national survey, more than two-thirds of families have already begun shopping and preparing for school season.

According to the National Retail Federation, families with K-12 students are expected to spend an average of $858 this year on essentials such as clothing, shoes and electronics

Over 30% of parents surveyed by Bankrate said they could not afford to buy school supplies this year amid inflation and tariffs.

However, local nonprofits, city governments and churches are stepping up to help families achieve their goals.

Dozens of free school events are being held throughout the region this month, offering everything from backpacks and notebooks to haircuts and health screenings.

This is a summary of upcoming events where families can find support regardless of their budget.

Huntington Park

The city of Huntington Park offers backpacks/school supplies, pantry boxes, health screenings and haircuts at Salt Lake Park, located at 3401 E. Florence Avenue in Huntington Park from August 23rd until 1pm.

Lincoln Heights

Free Block Party includes backpack giveaways, food distribution, games, live music, free haircuts and classic car shows.

Over 30 community partners will provide health screening and educational resources between Workman Street and Hancock Street in Los Angeles, August 9, 2025, from 1pm to 6pm.

Long Beach

The return to school event also includes free swimming for children ages 5 to 17.

It will be held on August 9th from 11am to 1pm at the California Aquatic Therapy and Wellness Center at 6801 Long Beach Boulevard. On Long Beach.

The event also offers access to free haircuts for kids, ice cream, storytime at the public library in Long Beach, and early childhood and special education resources.

It will take place on August 19th from 4pm to 7pm at the historic Bembridge House at 953 North Park Circle in Long Beach.

MacArthur Park

Dr. Rocio Rivas, Vice President of the LAUSD Committee, is partnering with local non-profit Raices to provide undergraduate supply and haircuts.

Resource Fair also hosts local street vendors affected by immigrant raids and provides you with the knowledge of your rights services for immigrants or tenants.

It will take place on August 9th from 10am to 2pm at Union Avenue Elementary School, 150 S. Burlington Ave.

Monrovia

Darden Leadership & Career Academy has once again partnered with Simply Divine Beauty Supply & Academy for the fifth annual regeneration giveaway from 10am to 2pm on August 9th at 301 W. Huntington Drive in Monrovia.

Rialto

Grinding Impact hosts the 6th Annual Back to School Backpack Drive & Bash and offers free backpacks and school supplies to K-12 students.

The event will include a free meal for the first 150 participants, Amazon giveaways, and a prize from Rialto Middle School, located at 1262 W. Rialto Ave., on August 6th, from 10am to 2pm.

Riverside

The free event offers backpacks filled with school supplies and free haircuts.

You will also have access to local support programs, including employment, housing, healthcare, mental health, vision and dental resources.

It will take place on August 9th from 8am to 12pm at the Rivcodcss Riverside Branch at 2081 Iowa Avenue, Riverside.

Highlands

Free events include lunch, games, free kids haircuts, access to local resources and a photo booth.

It will take place on August 9, 2025 from 1pm to 4pm at the Pacific Community Center at 814 Alpine St.

Whittier

The Whittier Wellness Community will win gifts at 7643 S. Painter Ave., including a free vision exam for young people, from 8am to 11am on August 6th.
