The family of a man in Huntington Beach who was killed by a teenager last week addressed shock and mistrust on Tuesday.
Jose Nares, who turned 30 on Tuesday, passed away last Friday, police said.
Nares’ brother recalls hearing a pop sound when he came home with his brother on a Friday night.
“It sounded like fireworks,” said David Nares, the victim’s brother.
Just a few steps from his home near the corner of Florida Street and Utica Avenue, David quickly escaped after seeing his younger brother struggling with the young man.
“I had to check a specific area and I called the emergency services,” David Nares said.
Police said Jose later died in the hospital after investigators recorded the entire neighborhood on Friday night.
Investigators quickly arrested a teenager between the ages of 14 and 18 on suspicion of murder and retrieved the flare gun.
“It’s very shocking because he was such a nice guy, I didn’t expect this to happen to him,” said Jose Nares’ cousin Christina Aguillara.
Jose’s family marked his birthday at the place where he was killed.
“I just feel the pain,” the brother explained. “In the end, I know now that my brother is resting in a better place.”
Police say the teenager was booked at the juvenile hall in one murder case.
