The security of luxury lapartments is loose even after unsolved murders, says tenants

Even after a horrifying, unsolved murder in an apartment in a luxury valley village last month, tenants continue to see what appears to be temporary roaming the halls of their buildings.

On April 26, the body of 53-year-old Menash “Manny” Hydra was found inside a unit on the fifth floor, the top story of the Ashton Sherman Village apartment in the 126,000 block of Riverside Drive.

Three days before the uneasy and tragic discovery, a resident living near the murder scene told KTLA about 3am on April 23 that he heard he was screaming and someone screaming for help.

“I just woke up with some loud voices and something crashed,” he told KTLA. “There was a scream and I called for our safety, and right after that I called the police.”

The resident didn’t want to share his name, as he would build many other tenants.

Video footage from doorbell cameras obtained by KTLA and later released by the Los Angeles Police Department and detectives says police were suspected of the murder and roamed the building’s hall just before 3am to enter the apartment.

LAPD is nervous about the details of the murder, and simply said in a news release that “the suspect illegally entered the victim’s apartment and a physical altercation continued, leading to the victim’s death.”

Residents say the latest security footage obtained by KTLA, obtained by a man with a bicycle who doesn’t live in an apartment, is roaming the halls of the second building at the Ashton Complex, as this morning on May 6th.

The man who says the tenants don’t live in the building saw him roam the halls of the apartment complex in the early hours of May 6, 2025. In the video, filmed at 3:41am, the man wearing a red sweater hat can be seen walking on his bike to one of the exits to the stairs. Six minutes later he was once again seen on a bike roaming the hall on another resident’s camera.

Attempts to invite LA primary schools to lockdown

On April 30, just four days after the body of 53 was found, surveillance footage shows another man, saying that the resident is not a tenant, and a garbage bag hangs on his shoulder inside the second building.

Regarding the advantages of building security, Ashton residents have repeatedly accused management of failing to address many of the issues before the horrifying murder.

In the wake of the murder, many feel that besides hiring a “patrol of courtesy”, they have done little to fix the temporary issues on the broken exterior doors and roof.

Some of the buildings currently working in painting have scaffolding before them. Residents who do not want to be identified are called “real life” chutes and ladders” for those who want to access the building.

KTLA has repeatedly contacted the management of Ashton Sherman Village Apartments for comments, but so far has not received any reply.

Anyone who is aware of the suspect they wanted in connection with the murder, or who has information about the investigation, is encouraged to contact the LAPD Valley Bureau at 818-374-9559. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call the LA Regional Crime Stopper Hotline at 800-222-8477 or leave tips online at www.lacrimestoppers.org.
