On Wednesday afternoon, the Senate confirmed President Donald Trump’s US Trade Representative (USTR) candidate, Jamieson Greer. The vote was 56-43.
Greer, formerly former USTR Robert Lighthizer’s chief of staff during Trump’s first term, imposed tariffs on China and renegotiated a trade deal with Canada and Mexico during his first administration. It is believed that they supported it. He is also a lawyer and a veteran of the Air Force Judge Advocate General, and has deployed a single deployment to Iraq.
The Senate Finance Committee advanced the nomination by 15-12 votes in early February despite democratic concerns about his support for President Trump’s trade agenda.

The confirmation of Greer comes shortly after Trump’s promise to impose tariffs on Mexico, China and Canada.

Greer is responsible for pursuing the US international trade agreement alongside President Trump’s agenda to support American employment and strengthen supply chain resilience.
Greer also said he is trying to balance trade with countries like Vietnam, which have a domestic trade surplus, in order to “have better reciprocity.”
