The teenage son of former New York Yankees star Brett Gardner appears to have died of choking as he may have been sick from eating something during his family vacation in Costa Rica.
Miller Gardner, 14, apparently died of asphixia “after the food was ingested and there was a possibility of poisoning,” an official from the Costa Rica Judicial Investigation Agency told NBC News.
Miller’s body was found on Friday in a hotel room in Manuel Antonio, a popular resort area on the country’s Pacific coast, official Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia said.
The cause of death is preliminary, and officials are awaiting autopsy and toxicology analysis, he said.

In a statement Sunday, Miller’s parents said their son died after he was ill with other families. He died peacefully in his sleep, they said in a statement.
“Miller is our beloved son and brother, and we still can’t understand our lives without his infectious smile,” the statement said. “He loved soccer, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived his life to the fullest every day.”
Outfielder Gardner spent 14 seasons of his career with the Yankees. He helped the team win the World Series in 2009, a year after his MLB debut.
