The Trump administration has renamed the Anajuac National Wildlife Reserve in Texas after a Houston girl who was brutally killed by two illegal Venezuelan immigrants last year.
The park, now known as the Joselynnungarei National Wildlife Reserve, held its name change ceremony on Thursday. The 39,000-acre sanctuary along the Texas Gulf coast of Anawack serves as a migratory bird and wildlife home managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
“Let her speak her name on this land. Let her reflect her spirit and her quiet strength. And let it stand as a will that her life is important,” said Doug Burgham, Interior Secretary, at the ceremony attended by Nungarei’s mother. “And her story, however tragically simple, is that it is told, retold and never forgotten.”

In a joint speech to Congress in March, President Donald Trump announced the renaming of the shelter to honor Nungarei and signed an executive order that renamed the park.
“I never thought that would happen. It was a really big shock and a surprise,” Jocelyn’s mother, Alexis Nungarei, told Fox26 at the time. “I was unsure. I really didn’t know how to respond. It was very surreal and very bittersweet.”

At the ceremony Thursday, Bulgham pointed out that Nungarei loves animals, offering his pathetic dol to his mother whom he didn’t speak to.
“The Joselyn’s family may find peace in the tranquility of Joselyn Nungarray National Wildlife Shelter, a lasting tribute to the beautiful young soul that was taken immediately from us,” said Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
It was revealed that 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungarray was strangled to death in June 2024 in Houston Creek.
Nungaray’s death attracted public attention amid criticism of the Biden administration over millions of illegal immigrants.
In December, prosecutors said they would seek the death penalty of the defendant’s murderer, 22-year-old Joha Jose Martinez Wrangel, and 26-year-old Franklin Jose Pena Ramos.
Both men lured Nungarei and put pressure on her neck causing her death, authorities said. They are also allegedly sexually assaulted her before placing her body under the bridge.

The search warrant later revealed that the man was a member of bloodthirsty Venezuelan gangster Tren DeLagua, who illegally entered the United States before the murder.
