US enemies such as China and Russia are beginning to target the northern US border with Canada, FBI director Kash Patel told lawmakers Wednesday.
In testimony before the House Intelligence Election Committee, Patel told lawmakers that “effective resolutions” against the crisis at the tropical border have shifted resources to target the borders of the Northern United States.
“The enemy will adapt,” Patel said.

Patel pointed out that the enemy has not stopped using the southern border entirely, but “monumental efforts” to secure borders and stop known or suspicious terrorists coming into the country have made moving people and substances like fentanyl illegally difficult since President Donald Trump took office.
Patel’s comments have recorded encounters that have risen 90% in most sectors as Trump has overseen dramatic changes at the US southern border since taking office in January.
This shift was supported by the deployment of thousands of US troops to the border. They have supported all CBP agents, from strengthening barriers to monitoring potential illegal crosses.

The sudden silence at the southern border comes after a record number of illegal intersections in the Biden administration over the past four years. This is also a trend that saw a dramatic increase in attempts to cross over from immigrants outside of North America.
According to CBP data, Chinese citizens are most likely to attempt illegal intersections, with the number of intersections from the country’s citizens increasing by more than 24,000 and more than 24,000.
Overall, Patel told lawmakers that between 2022 and 2025, around 178,000 Chinese citizens tried to cross the southern border.

Patel warned that new security at the tropical border could now open a threat to the north, and argued that US enemies would use the same tactics they had previously used in sectors that were not attracting much security attention.
