The open door provided an invitation that it seemed happy to accept the mountain lion at Raverne.

In the security camera video, a mountain lion walks down the aisle and enters the San Gabriel Valley House as if they own the place.

The family said the door was left open to drive the dog out. The mountain lion then entered the backyard and fell into the pool before leaving the property.

Raverne is about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles and is located south of the 210 highways and the San Gabriel Mountains to the north.

California has around 4,000 to 6,000 mountain lions, but wildlife officials are calling it a crude estimate without ongoing research throughout the state. More than half of the state is considered the main habitat for large cats.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife receives hundreds of mountain lions every year. Few things pose mountain lions as identified as pose an imminent threat to public safety, the department said. Mountain lions’ attacks on humans are extremely rare, and their nature is to avoid humans.

This is a complete list of recommendations from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife on what to do during mountain lion encounters.

It’s not just hiking, cycling or jogging. Leave a warning on the trail. When the hiking and jogging mountain lions are most active – pay attention to small children at dawn, dusk, and at night. Give them an escape route. Do not run it. Please calm down. Running triggers a chase and catches and kills reactions. Please don’t turn your back. Face the animal, make noise, waving your arms, or open the jacket if you’re wearing a jacket to make it look bigger. Throw rocks and other objects. Please pick up your little one. It doesn’t crouch or bending. Crouching down puts you in a vulnerable position where you look like a four-legged prey animal. But speak calmly and don’t use high-pitch tones or high-pitch screams. Anyone who runs can launch an attack. If there is a lion attack, we will fight back. Research into the attacks of mountain lions suggests that many potential victims fought well on rocks, sticks, garden tools, ink pens and even naked hands. Try standing up. If you knock down, try protecting your head and neck. If the mountain lion attacks a person, call 911 immediately.
