The world’s longest light rail line is likely to be even longer

The grand opening date for the latest expansion at LA Metro A Line is officially set.

On September 19th, the A-line will be extended approximately nine miles from the north end of the present Azusa to the new station in Pomona, with new stops in Glendra, Saint-Dimas and Raverne.

The A-line is currently 48.5 miles long, making it the largest light rail line in the world. This latest extension, followed by another final expansion into San Bernardino County, will help maintain that title in the near future.

Metrotest Car will travel to the intersection of Bonita Avenue and Cataract Street in San Dimas in July 2024.

Previously, the line segment north of Los Angeles Union Station was called the Gold Line and later called the L Line. At the time, the previously blue line line was far from holding the crown of the world’s longest light rail line.

In June 2023, LA Metro completed its regional connector project, creating three new metro stations and reorganising both the A- and E-lines, before the L-line retired and split between those lines to create a railway system that spans the cities we know today.

The northern expansion of the LA Metro Line has been working in a variety of ways for over 25 years, including its arrival in Pasadena in 2003 and in Pasadena in 2010 to extend the line from Pasadena to Azusa.

This portion of the ongoing expansion project began with a construction kickoff in July 2020. In addition to several new stations built, it also includes 19 bridges, 21 street intersections, new parking facilities and more than 10 miles of sound walls made from 500,000 recycled tires.

The line expansion was primarily funded by LA County’s Measuring M half-cent sales tax and state grants and Measuring R funds.

Authorities are posing on December 2, 2017 at the groundbreaking event of the Foothill Gold Line expansion to Montclair.

This most recent completed segment is considered Phase 2B1, with the final expansion of Montclair being called Phase 2B2. Both phases were originally scheduled to be completed simultaneously, but were eventually split up for funding reasons.

Unlike other LA Metro projects, Foothill’s expansion is overseen by the Foothill Gold Line Construction Bureau, an independent transport system that handles the design, construction and logistics of the build before the project is handed over to LA Metro at the time of “substantial completion.” LA Metro has been testing its systems and training operators since January.

Authorities boast that the project is offering either on time or on-budget or underbudget, but are skeptical of those claims.

LA Metro Lines will resume after 2 months of closure

The issue surrounds the final stages of the expansion from Pomona to Montclair.

Only one construction company submitted a bid for the project, and the estimate was hundreds of millions of dollars higher than the authorities’ budget. It was announced in April that the authorities would revise the plans and ask for new bids to complete the final and final parts of the project.

The Montclair expansion adds 3.2 miles to the overall length of the A-line, extending the world’s longest light rail line to a total of about 60 miles.
