Police in Anaheim are investigating bold and unusual art robbers, including the theft of two large-scale sculptures worth more than $2 million.
The theft occurred over the weekend at a warehouse near Tustin Avenue and 91 Freeway, and investigators believe heavy equipment, including Forklifts, was used to run it.
The stolen sculpture created by renowned artist and filmmaker Daniel Wynn is not only extremely valuable, but also very heavy. According to the artist’s representative, one weighs around 2,000 pounds, while the other weighs even heavier at 4,000 pounds.
The sculpture was last seen on Saturday when workers were in the warehouse. When they returned on Monday, both works were gone. Given the size and weight of the stolen art, the Anaheim police believe this is a targeted theft.
“Because of the nature of the stolen item, it appears that someone knew they were there and went there with purpose,” Sgt. Matt Sutter said. “This doesn’t happen very often here in Anaheim. It’s a relatively quiet area.”
The brave theft raised concerns about the security of warehouses, particularly in industrial areas that house high-value items. Police are urging local businesses to install surveillance cameras or security systems to prevent similar crimes in the future.
Artist Wynn is internationally known for his extensive sculpture and art installations. The missing pieces are considered a signature piece of his collection, and can be difficult to move or hide without attracting attention.
