Thieves litter through warning shots from OC jewelry store owners

The owner of an Anaheim jewelry store dispatched more than dozens of burglars who hit the burglar when he fired a warning shot while he was about to break into the store.

According to the Anaheim Police Department, the July 17 incident occurred at Al Amirah Jewelry, 570 Southbrookhurst Street, before 6:30pm.

In footage of the incident, at least half a dozen vehicles carrying masked, hooded suspects are pulled into the strip mall parking lot, rushing to the entrance to Al Amira’s gemstones carrying many gems and bags, including Pikax and Sledgehammers.

Several employees in the store, including the owner, ran towards the back of the store as the mob began pounding heavy tools against the glass front entrance and windows.

“When I looked out the window, I saw five cars with a lot of people. I can’t count them,” the owner of Al Amira who doesn’t want to be identified told KTLA. “At this moment, I think it’s just one thing to protect myself, my employees, my shop, my family business.”

Surveillance footage shot the store owner, lifting a handgun from behind the counter behind the store and firing a round into the bullet window.

“He was acting in self-defense,” Mohammad Aboocey, the owner’s lawyer, told KTLA. “He reasonably believed they were coming to do harm to himself, his family, his business. So he fired a warning shot to make sure no one was in.”

The same crew of burglars reportedly linked up with a successful Smash and Grab in Bethan Jewelry, nearly across the streets of 500 Southbrookhurst Street over a week ago.

In that example, the robber crew used the vehicle to attack the store’s display case by breaking the front of the facility’s glass and breaking it with a hammer and mallet.

It is unclear how much they escaped, but at least two suspects were captured a little later near Harbor Boulevard and Manchester Avenue.

“This appears to be a trend that has been appearing recently with more than 12 people, overwhelming employees and stealing thousands of dollars with merchandise,” APD Sgt. Matt Sutter told KTLA. “It’s not just here in Anaheim, but all over Southern California.”

Anyone with information about these investigations is advised to contact the Anaheim Police Department’s Robbery Department.
