Three men accused of stealing more than 1,200 pairs of Air Jordans from a train in the Mojave Desert were stopped by a GPS tracking device hidden inside the cargo, authorities said.
On Friday, authorities received a tip from BNSF Railway Police that a shipping container had been removed from a train near Amboy in San Bernardino County, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
Nike included a GPS tracker with a shipment of 11 retro shoes worth about $311,000. Officials have not said whether the shoes are a new color (each pair sells for about $230) or a different model.
Prosecutors said police tracked a GPS signal to a U-Haul truck in an Anaheim parking lot and found 1,278 pairs of shoes inside the vehicle. The suspects are believed to be part of an organized theft ring, a district attorney’s office spokeswoman said.
Brian Quintero Echaravia, 18, of Mesa, Arizona. Bernardo Romero Quintero, 34, of Phoenix. Olegario Flores, 26, was charged with felony theft and receiving stolen property. Two older men were also charged with possession of burglary tools. If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to up to three years in prison.
“Organized theft rings are no match for the sophistication and determination of law enforcement to pursue, arrest, and prosecute these thieves to the fullest extent of the law,” the Orange County District said. Atty. Todd Spitzer said in a statement.
