Thousands run out of time to claim $1 billion in tax refunds in 2021

According to the IRS, more than 1.1 million people have not been claimed for federal income tax refunds, which are at risk of becoming government property.

Authorities say there is more than $1 billion in 2021 that is currently not being charged at a deadline that claims the April 15 deadline is rapidly approaching.

“Under law, taxpayers usually have three years to file and request a tax refund. If they don’t file within three years, the money will become the property of the US Treasury,” the IRS said on its website.

For those who have not yet filed taxes, the median return for 2021 is around $781, the IRS says. This means that if not immediately charged, a significant chunk of change could be confiscated by the US Treasury.

In addition to unclaimed cash, eligible taxpayers may also miss out on income tax credits they earn. The estimate also does not include any potential recovery rebate credits.

Another reason to file these 2021 returns before the deadline includes the ability to use them on unpaid liabilities, such as unpaid taxation, child support, and federal obligations such as student loans.

Of the 1 million taxpayers eligible for returns, more than 116,000 were or were California residents. The median return for those Californians is around $600, but each household is different.

According to the IRS, the following are state-by-state estimates for individuals who may have a 2021 income tax refund deadline:

Taxpayers who need information to file a 2021 return can access wage and tax statements, tax conscription, or previous year’s tax forms via IRS.GOV, but it should be noted that the process takes several weeks. You can also request a copy of any missing tax documents from your employer, bank or financial institution.

The IRS warns that if no returns are filed in 2022 and 2023, your 2021 refund may be delayed.
