The Bay Area family of former San Francisco Giants pitchers is still among those who are missing after a devastating flash flood in central Texas that killed more than 100 people last week.
A gathering was held in Marin County Sunday for Mark Walker, Sarah Walker and his 14-year-old son Johnny. The Kentfields were visiting their villas on a hunt in central Texas when the disaster struck.
Mark is the older brother of Tyler Walker, who played for the Giants from 2004 to 2008.
Mark’s mother, Kathy, told the San Francisco Chronicle that Mark’s 16-year-old daughter, Ellie, was present at nearby Camp Waldemar and was rescued. The family last heard from Mark on Thursday, but later discovered that a family home along the Guadalupe River had been washed away by the flood.
“I’m sick of my stomach,” Cathy told the Chronicle. “It’s a terrible feeling because you’re helpless here.”
Mark’s son, Johnny, was due to be a freshman at Marine Catholic High School. The school issued a statement saying that a prayer service will be held on Tuesday evening.
“In these heartbreaking times, we are headed towards God to pray for the Walker family and all the victims of the devastating floods of Texas. We pray for a miracle in the hopes that Ellie will be reunited with her mother, father and brother,” the statement said.
Flash floods on Friday insisted on the lives of more than 20 people at Camp Mystic, a Christian Girls summer camp along the Guadalupe River. At least 27 campers and counselors have passed away, and as of Monday, 10 campers and counselors are still missing.
Texas officials are facing resentment over whether they properly prepared and warned residents about life-threatening weather conditions in the area known as the “Flash Flood Alley.”
