Law enforcement said the explosion in East Los Angeles on Friday morning killed three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies who were operating unattacked weapons by three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies.
The explosion occurred at the Biscailuz Regional Training Center at 1060 N. Eastern Ave. around 7:30am.
Aerial footage of the Sky5 showed a LASD vehicle with a shattered rear windshield and a nearby backpack on a car park asphalt that looked like a departmental explosive truck. The tarp on the bomb truck was visibly damaged.
Additional injuries were also reported, but their numbers and nature were not immediately disclosed. A press briefing was expected to take place late Friday morning.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been officially confirmed. However, KTLA’s Eric Spielman spoke with sources close to the investigation and reported that he was in the process of running a misfire weapon Thursday night when one device exploded.
When asked by KTLA’s Frank Buckley if the explosion was a coincidence, LA County superintendent Katherine Berger said, “All the roads go back to it.”
“I think it’s important for the sheriff. [Robert] Luna is about to dispel rumors, provide facts, fill in the void about it,” she added.
