Three sheriff deputies hospitalized at Socal Courthouse Brawl

Authorities say the Riverside County man, charged with multiple felony counts of domestic violence, was at the heart of a court brawl where three sheriff’s deputies were sent to the emergency room.

Ryan James Chalfant, 31, tried to flee the Riverside County Judicial Hall of Fame after refusing to be handcuffed during arrest hearing Friday.

Chalfant has faced two counts of physical injury charges against a spouse or householder who had previously been found guilty over the past seven years. This resulted in one criminal threat and one false imprisonment for committing a criminal threat, according to Riverside County Superior Court records.

Court representatives chased him from the court, where two additional representatives saw him and joined the pursuit, said department spokesman Sgt. Wendy Brito Gonzalez. All three deputies suffered minor injuries while trying to arrest Chalfant and were taken to a local hospital, she said.

Sheriff’s office will seek additional charges against Charphant as a result of the incident, she said.

He was rebooted Friday afternoon and booked with multiple new charges, according to the county inmate logs. They include committing felony while releasing bail, causing serious physical injuries, peace officer batteries, and using force to escape custody and violating probation.

Chalfant was not injured during the brawl, but was taken to hospital for medical evaluations for each department’s standard protocol, Brito-Gonzalez said.

He was first arrested on Valentine’s Day after a call for domestic violence and was released on $50,000 bail the following day, according to the county inmate logs. During his arrest hearing Friday, a judge set his bail at $1 million and ordered him to be arrested.

He is currently scheduled to be arrested again on Tuesday, court records show.

Court records show he was preliminary conviction for domestic violence and was on parole and probation at his arrest in February. In 2022, Charphant was found guilty of two felony injuries to a spouse or householder, two felony counts causing a criminal threat, and one misdemeanor from a police officer, according to court records.
