Long Beach police officers rescued three teenage girls believed to be victims of human trafficking and arrested a man, authorities confirmed.
According to the Long Beach Police Department, officers in the North District were on patrol when they discovered a 14-year-old girl who they believe was soliciting sex work. Investigation revealed that she was a victim of human trafficking.
A few days later, on January 20, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle occupied by two teenage girls and a male driver.
Missing 96-year-old woman believed to have evacuated from Eaton fire has been located.
Officers identified the man as Houston Hughes, 37, of Los Angeles. He was on parole for pimping and weapons violations.
Two boys, ages 16 and 17, who were in the car were also determined to be victims of human trafficking. Police allege Hughes sexually assaulted one of them.
Hughes was arrested on suspicion of parole violation and sexual assault, and had a prior felony conviction. He is currently being held without bail.
“I want to commend our officers for their service to the community and their exceptional work in addressing community safety concerns and rescuing vulnerable people,” said Police Chief Wally Hebeish. “Their efforts to investigate these incidents and prevent further exploitation demonstrate the Long Beach Police Department’s commitment to keeping our city safe.”
The three teenage victims were later reunited with their families, police confirmed.
