Republican lawmakers want to make Block Street a federal crime in the wake of anti-ice protesters and rioters locking up drivers in Los Angeles and other cities.

Sen. Tom Tillis (RN.C.) calls for this week to make intentional traffic a federal crime to interfere or create. “Safe and open streets” are a direct response to “radical tactics of anti-ice protesters who intentionally blocked roads and highways across the country,” Tillis said.

Lawbreakers could face fines and prisons of up to five years.

I call it a rebellion: Maxine Waters’ history of burning crowds from Rodney King to this day

Videos from Los Angeles show mobs blocking highways and city streets in the same way, sometimes fierce attacks and faces local and federal officials. Under California law, “willfully and violently obstructing the free movement of a person on a street, sidewalk or other public place” is a misdemeanor.

Tillis’s own condition was not affected by such blockage as protesters closed the busy portion of NC-147. Durham, North Carolina, is on the North Carolina highway during rush hour in November 2023. These protesters were trying to “liberate” Palestine in Western response to the October 7 massacre by Israeli Hamas and American citizens.

Immigration-related protests recently occurred on a major highway in Greensboro.

“The new tactic of radical protesters blocking roads and stopping business transactions is not only uncomfortable for innocent commuters, but also dangerous and will ultimately kill people.

Tillis added that “radical” anti-immigration enforcement protesters must face “the full weight of the law” if they put public safety at risk.

Sen. Ted Budd, a counterpart in Tarheel state in Tillis, will be taking part in the effort, saying in a statement that paramedics who have endured such blockages put the public in further danger.

“The First Amendment protects the right to gather peacefully and protest, but does not allow such actions,” Budd said.

In another recent incident, pro-Palestinian protesters blocked the Richmond Petersburg Turnpike in Virginia.

In that incident, protesters threw ladders and relaxed across the rocky Mount Bind lanes of the highway.

If the ‘preventable’ Sacramento Dem acts, CA GOP says

“Blocking major roads to stop traffic flow is nothing but lawlessness that should not be tolerated,” said Sen. Marsha Blackburn of nearby Tennessee.

“These activists not only intentionally create dangerous situations for themselves, but also said that, perhaps for citizens waiting for an ambulance or hardworking workers who lose their jobs late, they announced that they would co-sponsor Tillis’ laws, calling “Hamas sympathizers” like Richmond and Durham.

Refocusing on Los Angeles, co-sponsored Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala.

“[D]Omesto terrorists attacked ice and law enforcement officers, setting fire to police cars and blocking the streets.

“This is a prime example of what happens when outlawing is punished.”

New Orleans has seen large but more orderly protests such as last week’s anti-Trump “No Kings Day” event.
