Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced Monday that nighttime curfew hours will be reduced after authorities did not arrest him overnight Sunday since protests erupted against the immigrant attacks.
Starting Monday, the curfew will take effect at 10pm and will remain in effect until 6am in a one-square-mile area in downtown Los Angeles. For more information, please click here.
“Coupled with continued crime prevention efforts, the curfew has largely been successful in protecting shops, restaurants, businesses and residential communities from bad actors who don’t care about the immigrant community,” Mayor Bass said in a statement.
Earlier on Monday, LAPD announced on Sunday that no arrests were recorded overnight time since the anti-abolition protest began on Saturday, June 7, following immigration raids at three workplaces in downtown Los Angeles.
LAPD remains a citywide tactical alert.
“We haven’t disappointed with security,” said LAPD chief Jim McDonnell. “LAPD will maintain a strong presence in the downtown area and ensure the safety of residents, businesses and demonstrators.”
In an interview with NBC Los Angeles, Bass said the curfew is increasingly effective despite limiting hours for LA Business downtown, adding that business owners are “very, very supportive” to the curfew.
The mayor also said he doesn’t know when night restrictions will be lifted as U.S. troops sent by the Trump administration remain in Southern California.
“Part of the challenge we’re dealing with here is absolute uncertainty,” Bass said. “I hope that some level of communication will be opened next week. Now everyone is working through rumors.”
