Andrew Cuomo says he’ll go far.

The former three-term New York governor, who was defeated in double digits last month by democratic socialist Zoran Mamdani in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, announced on Monday that he will continue his general election bid as an independent candidate.

“Only 13% of New Yorkers voted in the June primary. The general election is in November and I’m there to win it,” Cuomo declared in a video posted to social media.

Cuomo then accused him of “My opponent, Mamdani, offers a smooth slogan, but there is no real solution.”

Three weeks ago, Mamdani’s major victory over Cuomo and nine other candidates shook the Democrats, turning the 33-year-old state legislator from Queens into the first Muslim mayor of the country’s most populous city.

Mamdani officially has won the NYC DEM primary with 12 points against Cuomo, who is currently in the race.

Mamdani surged to major victories thanks to an energetic campaign focused on affordable prices and high cost of living in New York City.

Mamdani has made smart use of social media platforms, including Tiktok. He proposed eliminating fares for taking New York City’s vast bus system, creating rent to freeze Cuny (City University in New York) into “tuition-free” city homes, providing “free childcare” for children up to five years old, and establishing a government-run grocery store.

And thanks to some of the efforts of the large grassroots military of volunteers, he took first place on frontrunner Cuomo, riding a wave of support from young, progressive voters.

“Unless you live under the rock, you probably know that the Democratic primary didn’t go the way I wanted,” said Cuomo, a former three-term governor who resigned in 2021 amid multiple scandals.

Looking for a political comeback, Cuomo said, “Like my grandfather said, when you get knocked down, learn the lesson, pick yourself up and join the game. That’s what I’m trying to do.

At the approval event on Monday, Mamdani responded to Cuomo’s movements.

“I welcome you all to this race, and I’m as confident as I’ve been to the Primary Night three weeks ago,” he said.

“I think he’s having a hard time agreeing with what Tuesday means,” Mamdani added. “We spent an entire campaign where Andrew Cuomo was told it would be inevitable that he would become the next mayor. He believed in himself.”

Mamdani also responded to photos of Cuomo trolling the former governor on Monday, filming his campaign video.

“We made him a guy on the street with a guy from Carhartt. By next week he will sipped Adeni Chai and eat Harriat al-Nar,” Mamdani said in connection with video of his own viral campaign.

The announcement by Cuomo was not a major surprise.

While he acknowledged Mamdani’s victory at the primary, Cuomo kept the door open for the November run as a candidate with election rules in New York State Permit.

And later last month, Cuomo spent the deadline for candidates who were already eligible to run as independents to reject the independent voting line.

However, sources told Fox News at the time that Cuomo had not yet committed to running an aggressive general election campaign between summer and fall.

In deep blue New York City, the main Democratic winners are much preferred to win the general election. If Mamdani wins in November, he will become New York City’s first Muslim and millennial mayor.

Also on the general election vote is Democratic mayor Eric Adams. Eric Adams dropped his major bid earlier this year amid a sinking poll count in the wake of many controversy.

Adams runs as independent.

Also in the general election vote will be Jim Walden, an independent federal prosecutor, and Curtis Swawa, co-founder of the Guardian Angels.
