CQ Brown’s chairman is visiting the US-Mexico border to assess the military’s progress in the wall’s strengthening section, the Associated Press reported Friday.

The Department of Defense deployed 1,500 active duty troops on the US-Mexico border two days after President Donald Trump took office. More service members were sent to the border earlier this month.

According to the Associated Press, there are about 9,200 US troops at the border, of which 4,200 were deployed under federal orders. The other 5,000 are the National Guard.

Trump’s State Department declares Tren de Aragua, MS-13 and Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations

On Wednesday, the Trump administration designated eight gangs and cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, including Tren de Aragua, the Sinaloa Cartel and MS-13. The move expands the ability to crack down on criminal organizations operating on US government territory.

In an announcement on the issue, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there was “sufficient de facto basis” under section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act to issue the designation.

On Wednesday, US Northcomb Commander General Gregory M. Guillott and Mexican Secretary of Defense General Ricardo Trevira Trejo have spoken about coordination along the border and signed a mutual agreement on collaborative activities, the Department of Defense announced.

The agreement is said to call for more information sharing and better communication methods, and for calls for Mexico and the United States to respect each other’s sovereignty.

The deployment of forces and wall fortress are part of Trump’s crackdown on the southern border.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration began sending illegal immigrant flights to Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay detention facility.

Approximately 30,000 “illegal criminal aliens” could be held at a base that once housed hundreds of prisoners.
