Last week, the National Park Service fired 1,000 people, sparking backlash from the now popular rangers and advocacy groups. However, the Washington Post reported that the NPS had recovered previously cancelled job offers to 5,000 temporary workers.
“Although it is essential that parks allow seasonal staffing, staffing of this scale will have devastating consequences for the parks and communities,” said President and CEO of the National Park Conservation Association. Theresa Pierno. “We are concerned that a small park has closed the doors to our visitors centres and that a large park has lost key staff, including wastewater treatment operators.”

Pierno continued to say that cutting 1,000 full-time jobs from the park, especially ahead of the peak season, is “reckless and could have serious public safety and health consequences.”
“We need the right staff,” Phil Francis, executive director of the Alliance for Protecting American National Parks, told Nexter earlier this month. “We don’t have that. It’s going to be a really difficult year to provide the services and protections we need.”
Francis previously warned that staff cuts could result in the closing of visitor centers, lengthening the lines and reducing regular maintenance such as toilet cleaning.
Guides, trail maintenance workers, and people who “do the bold search and rescue” could also be affected by the job openings, said Kristen Brengel, senior vice president of government at the National Park Conservation Association.
