The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said Friday it plans to cut its workforce by 23% and close its research and development offices.

The loss of more than 3,000 employees comes after layoffs and incentives to leave the agency amid the Trump administration’s wide-ranging efforts to streamline the federal government.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, the EPA has taken a closer look at our business, ensured that our agents are equipped more than ever, and realized our core mission to maintain a great American comeback while protecting human health and the environment,” EPA administrator Lee Zeldin said in a statement.

“This power cut will help us better fulfill that mission while being responsible for your hard-earned taxes.”

The EPA said the cuts would save the government $748.8 million.

As part of the reorganization, the EPA said the new office could focus on research “more than ever” and that it plans to open a new office for applied science environmental solutions to replace the Research and Development Bureau.

This comes a week after the Supreme Court issued a ruling to clarify the way the administration would take on a massive layoff.

Justin Chen, chairman of the U.S. Government Employees Federation Council 238, represents thousands of EPA employees and called the R&D office “the mind and brain of the EPA.”

The Department of State will launch a massive layoff of approximately 1,800 employees in the coming days

“Without it there is no way to assess human health and environmental impact,” Chen said.

Fox News Digital has contacted the EPA for comment.

The announcement comes two weeks after 139 employees signed a “declaration of objections” that claims the Trump administration is hurting the agency’s mission.

The administration argued that employees were “illegally undermining” the president’s agenda.

Reuters and the Associated Press contributed to the report.
