The Trump administration has released about $6.8 billion in previously frozen federal funds for the K-12 program, the Department of Education announced Friday. The announcement comes as Director Linda McMahon attended the National Association of Governors (NGA) Summer Conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has completed reviews of Title IC, Title II-A, Title III-A and Title IV-A ESEA Funds and Title II WIOA Funds and has directed the department to release all formula funds.
More than 20 Democratic attorney generals sued the Trump administration earlier this month, saying the Department of Education’s federal funding freeze was unconstitutional and “debilitating” the state a few weeks before the new semester.
We thanked McMahon for lifting funds during NGA education sessions on Friday, including Governor Jared Police of Colorado, and Governor Kevin Stitt, the vice-chairman of Oklahoma.

“How can we communicate more to make sure this confusion and uncertainty doesn’t happen again around fundraising, and that people know things before?” Police asked McMahon at the Colorado Springs Stage.
“There is no guarantee that we will eliminate all communication gaps that occur, but some of it can be said to be just a transitional aspect,” explained McMahon.
The Education Secretary said another aspect of the federal fundraising freeze was that the OMB Budget Office “had taken a long time to actually check the title funds before releasing all the programs and more.”

McMahon assured the governor that he reviewed the funds for the title and went through the process that “we will not find ourselves in the same situation.”
Several governors who attended and had the opportunity to ask questions in the education discussions between Police and McMahon thanked the education leaders for returning federal title funds to the state.

McMahon said he appreciated the governor’s questions and comments, and she has committed to visiting many states and talking to as many governors as possible to get a sense of the full scope of the country’s diverse educational needs.
Police and Stitt said in a joint statement released by the NGA that they appreciated these bipartisan discussions with Secretary McMahon and other key officials during the NGA summer meeting.
“The action will enable schools across the country to maintain important programs for English learners, teacher training and student enrichment. As the new academic year begins, NGA leaders emphasize that the governors of both parties are united by prioritizing the education of their children.
Prior to her remarks, in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, McMahon confirmed her commitment to working with the governor as the Trump administration attempts to dismantle the Department of Education.
“If you’re going to bring education back to the state, it’s very important that you have to talk to the governor,” McMahon said.
“Obviously, education is a nonpartisan issue,” McMahon added. “If we’re going to bring education back to the state, that means they’ll return the part that’s currently being offered by the federal government to them, and they’re worried about that.”

Trump signed an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education earlier this year, fulfilling one of his major campaign promises in the 2024 presidential election.
