The Trump administration is reportedly blocking Taiwan’s president from dropping in New York City on his way to a diplomatic conference in Central America under pressure from China.

The Financial Times reported on Monday that the administration denied the opportunity for Taiwanese President Lai Ching-Te to stop by New York City during a trip to Paraguay, Guatemala and Belize.

However, on Monday, the Taiwanese President’s Office issued a statement indicating that LAI “currently does not plan to go abroad.” According to Taiwanese media, the company said. Sources familiar with the State Department’s issues confirmed that no official travel plans for the LAI president have been announced.

“In light of ongoing rehabilitation efforts in southern Taiwan, following recent typhoons and regional developments, including US tariffs, the President has no plans to make overseas visits at this time,” said President Lai’s statement.

According to The Financial Times, Lai’s decision to travel came after being informed that he was not allowed to stop in New York City during the trip, as he was said to be familiar with alleged travel claims, according to the Financial Times.

Lai’s trip is reportedly to include stops in Dallas, but it is unclear whether the Trump administration plans to ban Lai from halting there either, according to The Financial Times.

The White House did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. However, State Department sources familiar with the issue show that the Trump administration remains committed to the government’s longstanding Chinese policy rooted in Taiwan relations law and joint diplomatic agreements with China, indicating the long-standing pledges the government has created regarding Taiwan and China.

Despite being in line with years of government policies, the move still has attracted criticism from Asian policy experts and Trump critics.

Lyle Morris, a senior foreign policy and national security fellow at the Asian Association’s China Analysis Center, said Trump’s second term “first concrete move” on Taiwan was a “cause of concern.”

“The decision was made in the context of ongoing US-China trade negotiations and the potential Trump XI conference,” Morris said in X.

“President Lai’s rejection of transportation is a deep concern with a bipartisan precedent, and we will send a reckless signal to Beijing that a partnership with Taiwan is on the negotiation table,” added Democrat Sen. Dn.J. Dn.J. following news about President Lai’s alleged trip.

“American leadership now begins in line with Trump’s Fit and Ukraine, NATO allies and other key partners. We encourage President Trump to reverse the course and ask both parties to go and allow traffic and ask his Congressional colleagues to join that call.”

News of the Trump administration’s decision to ban Taiwan’s president from stopping in New York City is reportedly feeling a potential trip to Beijing himself alongside the leading US CEOs. But so far, there has been nothing about Trump’s trips.
