Trump administrator cuts $4 million in Princeton funding related to climate research

On Tuesday, the Commerce Department announced its decision to cut funding related to Princeton University’s climate research.

Commerce Secretary Howard Luttonick said in a news release that the cuts were made “after a detailed and thorough review of the department’s financial support program for the purposes of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) current program.”

The division added that the termination of these funds from Princeton, which came into effect on June 30, “consistent with President Trump’s commitment to his administration, streamlining and reducing the costs and size of the federal government. The Commerce Department is based on that promise.”

Princeton received $455 million in federal funds in 2024.

The agency said the financial award previously given to Princeton through NOAA, including the Institute for Cooperatives for Modeling the Earth System (CIME), “is no longer consistent with the program goals of NOAA, a sub-agency of the Department of Commerce and will no longer maintain the Trump administration’s priorities.”

Princeton did not respond immediately to inquiries from Fox News Digital.

The Cimes website states that the program “contributed to the development of marine and atmospheric models, conducted research on climate and biogeochemical cycling, and educated several generations of postdoctoral researchers and graduate students.”

However, the Commerce Department said the CIMES agreement “contributes to a phenomenon known as “climate anxiety,” which is a massive increase among young Americans, and promotes an exaggerated, incredible climate threat.”

The department further stated that subseason interactive seasons to climate risks and seasonal predictability agreements “suggest that the Earth will fluctuate significantly in water availability as a result of global warming.”

“It also aims to address coastal flooding, while other more targeted research efforts are addressing this issue,” the release continues.

The department said the administration’s goal in terminating these funds would save US taxpayer dollars and “continue to personalised financial support for its outstanding cooperation agreements, grants and other financial support, regardless of Princeton or other recipients, to avoid wasted government spending.”

Since Trump began investigating schools on suspicion of anti-Semitic discrimination and harassment, universities across the country have cut federal funds for certain schools that have allowed anti-Israel protests on campus since the attack on Israel.
