Alaska’s Congressional delegation praised President Donald Trump and Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgham for launching the process of rescising Biden-era rules that restricted oil and gas exploration in Arctic National Wildlife Reserve (ANWR) resource-rich Section 1002.
Senator Dan Sullivan said Bulgham has announced the move at Ukkiagvik (formerly Barrow) town hall on the northern tip of the vast state.
Sullivan called Biden-era rules “illegal” and said it had been turned into a “de facto wilderness” in a vast strip of areas originally intended to produce energy in the country.
“Responsible resource development has changed the lives of Iñupiat people who help build clinics, gymnasiums and water infrastructure and support basic amenities that most Americans take for granted,” Sullivan said.

Burgham said his agency determined that the 2024 regulations exceeded federal boundaries under the Oil Reserve Act of 1976, and created “an unnecessary barrier to responsible energy development in Alaska’s national oil reserves.”
“The Congress was clear. Alaska’s National Oil Reserve was secured to support America’s energy security through responsible development,” he said.
Rep. Nick Begich III called the decision a “major victory” and said he would work with Trump to ensure responsible resource development.

“This is a victory not only for those who support responsible development, but also for those who believe in the rule of law,” Sen. Lisa Markowski added.
“The 2024 management rules clearly violated the law and established presumptions of restrictions and development as part of the last administration’s efforts to turn the north slope into one huge area of the federal wilderness,” she continued.
“Repealing the rules won’t undermine world-class environmental standards, but it can generate more energy as Alaska intended Congress. The result is a good job for Alaskans, a more affordable energy in America, and a huge new income for the government.”
In January, Gov. Mike Dunleavy told Fox News Digital that the final legislatively mandated land sale for development at ANWR was set to fail.

“These leases should be carried out in good faith in line with established historical processes, and obviously, the Biden administration over the past four years has been cruel in Alaska,” he said at the time that he believes the Trump administration will do what it announced this week.
At the time, Murkowski also said during the working group that current interior officials “openly acknowledged” that the process of setting restrictions on ANWR was carried out to deliberately circumvent the Congressional Review Act.
That law allowed other Senate Republicans to revoke several Biden-era EPA actions last month with a simple floor vote.
