President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a trade agreement between the United States and the European Union on Sunday.
The announcement came in a moment after the two addressed the media, agreeing that the possibility of an agreement was around 50-50. Von Der Leyen said the negotiations had “heavy things,” but the two leaders agreed that they were pleased with the outcome.
“We agree that the automobile and all other tariffs will be linear 15%,” Trump said.
“So we have a 15% tariff. We have all the openings of European countries. I think it was essentially closed. That means you weren’t exactly receiving our orders. You weren’t taking our farm exactly.”

Trump and von der Leyen spoke to the Scottish press on Sunday, but it sounded unclear whether they would reach the deal.
“We look forward to talking to you to see if we can do anything,” Trump said of the negotiations. “We had a very good relationship over the years, but it was a very one-sided deal and very unfair to the US.”
In response to a reporter’s question, von der Leyen agreed that Trump must have a “rebalance” of bilateral trade worth billions of dollars.

“It’s about rebalancing,” von der Leyen said, sitting next to Trump. “You can call it fairness, you can call it rebalance. We have surplus, we have a deficit in the US, and we have to balance it.”
