Announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, President Donald Trump heads to The Hague, Netherlands for the Annual Summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The president is expected to land in the Netherlands on Tuesday and return to the White House on Wednesday.
It was Trump’s first NATO summit since becoming a second term president. In the past, he has taken advantage of NATO members for “free roads” from US military protection. This time, the European allies want to prove he is wrong.
NATO has signed contracts with all countries to increase defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product, except for Spain.
Trump initially created demand that was expected to be confirmed at the summit.
“This summit is really about NATO reliability and we are urging all our allies to step up to the plate and pay a fair share for transatlantic security,” said U.S. NATO Ambassador Matthew Whitaker.

Spain complicated the consensus when Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez demanded exemption from his new spending targets.

“We fully respect the legitimate desire to increase defense investment in other countries, but we are not going to do that,” Sanchez said.
Trump is expected to meet with Latte and other world leaders and hold a press conference. Ukrainian President Voldymi Zelenki is also expected to be present, and continues to promote entry into the Ukrainian alliance and its collective defense agreement.

Latte wanted the summit to become a show of NATO unification for Russian President Vladimir Putin amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, the confrontation between the US, Israel and Iran makes the conference less easy to predict.
