President Donald Trump has appointed Susan Monales as the candidate for the next director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), calling the candidate a “devoted civil servant.”

Monales, now acting director of the CDC, will replace former Trump candidate Dr. David Weldon. The Trump administration never gave official reasons that Weldon’s nomination was withdrawn earlier this month, but sources familiar with the issue told Fox News Digital it was a “vain effort.”

“It’s clear that the Senate votes weren’t there to confirm him,” the source explained. “This must have been a useless effort.”

In a Truth Social Post released Monday, Trump wrote that Monales “brings decades of experience defending innovation, transparency and powerful public health systems.”

“She holds her PhD from the University of Wisconsin and has postdoctoral training in microbiology and immunology at Stanford School of Medicine,” the president wrote. “Dr. Monares understands the importance of protecting our children, our community and our future.”

Trump also claimed that Americans had “lost confidence” in the CDC, citing “political bias and mismanagement” as a reason.

“Dr. Monares will work closely with our great Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert Kennedy Jr.,” the president continued. “Together, they will prioritize accountability, high standards and disease prevention to ultimately deal with the chronic disease epidemic and make America healthy again!”

According to Monares’ CDC biography, she previously worked at the White House for the Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Security Council.
