President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Building” faces criticism, even within his own party, as he remains skeptical of the massive spending package and the potential impact on the country’s debt, despite being considered by Republican-controlled Congress.
The spending bill, which passed late last month and is now in the hands of the Senate, aims to address many issues, including tax policy, border security and immigration, defense, energy production, debt restrictions, and coordination of snaps and Medicaid.
But without a serious overhaul, Sen. R-KY. Lawmakers like this are “no” in the law to increase national debt restrictions. He is one of a group of at least four Republican senators who have expressed concern over Trump’s bill as the package predicts a rise in national debt.

This week, Paul communicated his concerns to media members, informing them that the bill would raise the debt cap by $5 trillion.
“We’ve never actually raised our debt cap without meeting that goal,” he said. “So you can say it’s not going to be added directly to your debt, but if you add $5 trillion in the ceiling, it fills it.
As of Tuesday, the Treasury Department said it had $36.2 trillion in government bonds measuring what the US owes to creditors. Trump pushed back Paul’s comments about his bill.

Meanwhile, the national deficit that occurs when federal spending exceeds revenue was $1 trillion as of Tuesday, according to Treasury data.
On Tuesday, White House press chief Caroline Leavitt said “the blatantly false claim that “one, big, beautiful bill” is based on the Congressional Budget Office and other scorekeepers who use harsh assumptions and have historically done something frightening historically beyond Democrats and Republican administrations.”

As Fox Business previously reported, the outlook for federal debt levels is bleak, with economists increasingly warning at the heated pace of spending by Congress and the White House.
A recent analysis by the Nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) shows that, based on the bill’s terms, the bill will add more than $2 trillion to the budget deficit over a decade.
Overall, the package’s tax cuts and reforms add nearly $3.8 trillion to the deficit over a decade, while spending cuts in other parts of the bill offset some of that to a $2.3 trillion figure.
Elon Musk, who finished his tenure last week as Trump’s lead in the government’s Department of Efficiency (DOGE), doubled his position on Tuesday that the House settlement package was “hate.”

“Sorry, I can’t stand it anymore,” Musk posted on X on Tuesday. “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional expenditure bill is a nasty hatred. I’m embarrassed by those who voted for it. I know you were wrong. You know that.”
The Trump administration and some Congressional Republicans have pushed back the bill’s estimates, also known as the one big beautiful bill law, and argued that economic growth from tax cuts will stimulate economic activity and lead to more tax revenue than expected.

“I hope we do a lot to get more cuts,” R-Pa. Rep. Scott Perry told Fox News about the bill. “We don’t want to bankrupt the country, and what Elon should realize is that they don’t need more solar and EV credits. That really makes it worse. But he probably knows that.”

To push back criticism, the White House has launched a website that allows Americans to show how much the bill personally saves.

The House passed one big beautiful bill law on May 22, with a narrow vote of 215-214-1, primarily along the party line.
If a version of the bill is revised by the Senate, the law must return to the House for another vote before going to Trump’s desk and become the law.
