President Donald Trump put the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under review on Sunday after signing an executive order aimed at “dramatically” improving the agency’s effectiveness, priorities and capabilities. I did.

Trump’s executive order establishes a FEMA Review Council consisting of no more than 20 members and co-chaired by the secretaries of Homeland Security and Defense.

Congress is being formed after FEMA’s response to Hurricane Helen and other recent disasters “demonstrated the need to improve effectiveness, priorities, and capabilities.

“Despite obligating nearly $30 billion in disaster relief over the past three years, FEMA has been able to leave vulnerable Americans without the resources or support they need when they need it most,” the President said. Trump also said FEMA would lose its mission focus and divert limited resources and staff to support missions outside its scope and authority. The President specifically highlighted that FEMA has spent more than $1 billion welcoming illegal immigrants.

“Americans deserve an immediate, effective, and fair response to disaster,” the order continued. “Therefore, FEMA requires a full-scale review by individuals highly experienced in effective disaster response and recovery. shall recommend improvements or structural changes.

Trump announced Friday that he plans to overhaul FEMA as North Carolina continues to recover from Hurricane Helen, more than 120 days after the storm devastated the state.

“I will also be signing executive orders to begin the process of fundamentally reforming and overhauling FEMA or to begin the process of getting rid of FEMA,” Trump told reporters in North Carolina on Friday morning. He told the group. “Frankly, I don’t think FEMA is good.”

Trump promised that his administration would step in and help North Carolina quickly remediate the damage, vowing to “do a good job” of the state.

The president also said he wants states to assume more responsibility when disasters occur, arguing that those familiar with states are better equipped to provide disaster response and relief. did.

So far, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers claims only half of the debris recovery from Hurricane Helen is complete. Additionally, thousands of North Carolina families remain in hotels, with FEMA footing the bill through its Transitional Housing Assistance Program.
