President Donald Trump is expected to issue an executive order on Thursday, with the aim of abolishing the Department of Education, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The newspaper reviewed the draft order, citing several people who had been described on the issue.

Newly sworn in education secretary Linda McMahon has directed that “all necessary measures be taken to promote the closure of the education sector” based on “the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law.”

“The experiments of dominating American education through federal programs and dollars, and the inexplainable bureaucrats support these programs and dollar support, but our children, teachers and families have failed.”

Shortly after taking her position, McMahon said, “We will send education back to America.”

Trump has been talking for a long time about dismantling the Department of Education, saying that he failed American students.

“It’s a big fraudulent job,” the president said in November. “They are ranked among the top countries in the world. We are ranked 40th, but we are ranked 1st in one category. Cost per student. So they cost more per student than any other country in the world, but they are ranked 40th.”

In a letter to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (help) (help) Democrats (help) on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, McMahon said she “heart-heartedly” agreed to Trump’s plan to abolish the department.

With around 4,500 employees, the department is the smallest cabinet-level agency, reports the Wall Street Journal. It is now offering an incentive of up to $25,000 to the majority of staff resign or retire by Monday evening ahead of the rumored workforce cuts.

“President Trump believes that Washington’s bureaucracy should be abolished so that education can be returned to the states it belongs to. I sincerely support and agree with this mission,” McMahon wrote.

Under McMahon, according to her letter, the department works from three basic convictions. Parents are the primary decision-makers in the education of their children, and taxpayer-funded education should focus on “meaningful learning of mathematics, reading, science and history – not divisive DEI programs, gender ideology” and on the path to making the path of well wells to meet the needs of post-secondary careers.

Aubrie Spady from Fox News Digital contributed to this report.
