Taiwan’s President Lai Qingte had planned a stopover in New York on his way to a trip to Latin America, but the Trump administration reportedly refused permission to stop after China challenged it.
The US has not maintained formal ties with Taiwan, but such stops have happened before.
Last week, the Trump administration banned Nvidia’s low-power H20 chips from promoting artificial intelligence by selling them to China, claiming they were the “fourth chip” in the US.
The move was a concession in talks with China over rare earth minerals, hoping that Beijing would stop it from blocking out exports of materials needed for all kinds of American technology.

The US and China signed third round of high-level trade talks on Tuesday ahead of the August 12 deadline, but are expected to kick in by Chinese tariffs announced by Trump in April.
Trump said reporters’ Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent felt the meeting was “very good,” but it is still unclear whether the two sides have reached a robust agreement or plans to extend the August deadline.
The Democrats argued that they “encourage Beijing to take positive action and encourage more aggressive concessions that could lead to trade negotiations.”
