On Tuesday, the Pentagon announced that half of the 4,000 National Guard troops deployed in Los Angeles will be released from duties.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegses ordered 2,000 National Guard troops released from what they called the “federal protection mission.”
“The lawlessness in Los Angeles has subsided thanks to our troops that have stepped up to answer calls,” Parnell said in a statement.
Protesters will hold their signs on Sunday, June 8, 2025 during an immigration march at MDC’s Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles.

Hegseth and the Trump administration have made around 4,000 California State Guards federal government in an unprecedented display of force to address local unrestraints over the rise in immigration enforcement in Southern California. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Mayor Los Angeles Karen Bass strongly opposed the move, saying they only caused the situation to be inflamed.
Even if 2,000 units return home, another 2,000 National Guard and 700 active Marines will be revitalized in the area.
They are tasked with protecting federal buildings and assisting federal agents in carrying out immigration enforcement projects.
