(Hill) – President Trump squeezed egg costs across the country by claiming prices were “too low” at the White House on Friday.
Trump praised Agriculture Secretary Brook Rollins for doing a “great” job, claiming that the egg price is “down 87%, but no one is talking about it.”
“You can get all the eggs. You see, we have too many eggs. In fact, the prices are too low. I just want to let you know that prices are falling,” the president said Friday after being sworn in as administrators of Medicare and Medicaid services.
On Friday, the average wholesale price for eggs was $3.13, a slight increase from the previous week, USDA data shows. Prices have been falling since February, and retail prices have also begun to fall.
“Price levels to consumers have been significantly eased from the initial highs, but remain at a level that has not increased more reliability than the usual purchase needs,” the Department of Agriculture wrote.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said egg prices went to $6.23 per dozen in March. It was an increase of nearly a dollar from $5.90 in February to $4.95 per dozen in January.
“By the way, prices are falling. The groceries are falling. Eggs, they hit me very hard. I will never forget the first day, the first week of my inauguration, they were screaming at me about the eggs. I said, ‘What is an egg?’ They doubled and I said, ‘I just got here.’ They were standing up like doubles, triples, so you got nothing,” Trump said Friday.
“They said you didn’t have eggs for Easter,” the president added. “Well, you can have all the eggs you want.”
Still, US consumers are working on egg prices, with 49% of them changing the way they celebrate holidays, according to a study by Jif Davis.
