President Donald Trump has appointed Virginia officials to lead the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) in the new administration.

In a Truth Social Post Tuesday, Trump wrote that he nominated Terry Cole as the next administrator for the DEA. Cole is currently the Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

According to the Virginia Government website, Cole was previously the chief of staff and executive officer of the DEA’s special operations division and was the president of the DEA’s National Security Council. The website also points out that Cole had worked at the DEA for 22 years, but it writes that Trump has been employed by the DEA for 21 years.

In a social media post, Trump said he was “pleasant” to announce the call that needs to be confirmed in the US Senate as his candidate.

“Terry is a 21-year DEA veteran who tours in Colombia, Afghanistan and Mexico City. He currently serves as the Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security for Virginia, with over 19,000 employees. He leads public safety agencies in 11 states.”

Trump also added that Cole holds a Rochester Institute of Technology degree and certificates from the University of Virginia and Notre Dame.

“Together, we will save lives and make America safe again. Congratulations Terry!” President’s post has concluded.

Trump originally nominated Florida Sheriff Chad Cronister as his first pick to lead the DEA, but the Hillsboro County Sheriff Cronister later retracted his name from consideration in December.

“It’s a lifetime honor to be nominated for President @RealdonaldTrump to serve as administrator for the Drug Enforcement Office,” Chronister wrote in an X’s post at the time.

“In the past few days, this very important responsibility has been set, so I have concluded that I must withdraw from consideration from respect. More work for the citizens of Hillsboro County Yes, I have many initiatives I’m doing. I’ve committed to fulfilling it.”

The DEA is expected to work with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to fulfill Trump’s campaign promise to restore security at the tropical borders. At the end of January, federal agents conducted a national roundup of more than 1,200 illegal immigrants accused of committing crimes in the United States
